Nanny & Parent Performance Evaluation

One of the things I really looked forward to when I was a teacher was my performance evaluation day!

If you know anything about me, you know I am obsessed with personal and professional growth! I am always seeking to learn new things or ways to improve. Mastering, after all, is an ongoing journey, in my opinion.

While performance evaluation days may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it sure was mine, and when I learned that I would be getting one after 30, 60 and 90 days, boy, was I happy! It was with that in mind that I developed this tool a few years ago.

After so many years in the industry, I found it would be really valuable to have feedback early on, and often, in order to keep channels of communication open and expectations at check. I went further and really believed that it would be very helpful for parents to also have an evaluation. Clearly, I didn’t think of me evaluating them, at least not on paper – though, let’s be honest, stellar nannies won’t put up with less than stellar employers – but maybe a self-evaluation tool that would prompt them to think from their nanny’s perspective.

When I first announced the idea into the nanny world, folks thought I was crazy! Nannies said they would never feel confident about bringing this up and I confess I was very surprised with the negative reaction. However, I really thought it was a valid and useful tool and went along with my own gut instinct and creativity. I am happy to report that after using it for several years and sharing with a number of close nanny friends, I have heard nothing but amazing feedback and I am now happy to share it with you all!

Depending on where you live, your state may already give you the right to request a written performance review under their domestic workers’ law. This is the case in Massachusetts, and I believe it will become the standard under the Federal Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights introduced earlier this summer.

When and how you can request a performance evaluation?

I have shared this with families when I first go to a job interview as part of what I call “Parent Packet” which also contains my resume, work-agreement, a Hiring-guide for parents, along with a few other resources, such as the Massachusetts Notice to Domestic Employees – which technically, employers are the ones supposed to give it to you upon hiring – guaranteed hours articles, notice on mandate reporters, etc.

If you are already employed, you can still introduce this evaluation on your nannyversary – which is your hiring date anniversary - or even after a 3, 6, or 9 months. You can approach the subject by telling employers you recently learned about this from a nanny friend, training or conference and would love to get feedback on your performance.

Finally, I also want to share that getting this feedback early on has more benefits than you can imagine:

  • Feel confident and motivated knowing you are meeting expectations
  • Know exactly what needs to be improved
  • Establish healthy communication habits
  • Concrete feedback in writing, which you can use as reference and testimonials
